One Great Source of Ideas You Might Not Have Considered

Right now, I’ve got dozens of blog post ideas sitting in a spreadsheet on my computer. It took me next to no time to gather them … and I know that they’re spot-on for my audience.
How?
I surveyed my readers, and one of the questions I asked was what they wanted me to write about.
Of course, not everyone wrote down an idea. But many of them did – lots of great ideas that I might not have considered myself. And it took me just seconds to download all those ideas into a spreadsheet.
Have you ever tried this? If your blog’s new, or if your readers don’t seem very engaged, you might be reluctant to give it a go – but even a few responses can be enough to give you some extra blogging inspiration.
I use SurveyMonkey to run simple surveys, with a mix of multiple-choice questions to gain insight into what broad topics my readers might be interested in (fiction, non-fiction, blogging…) and open-ended questions so they can tell me what’s on their mind.

What if You Have Very Few Readers?

Perhaps your blog is brand new – or not so brand new, but you’re struggling to get any readers. In this case, head to a big blog in your niche. Read through the comments on some recent posts and look for:
  • What questions are readers asking?
  • What topics have clearly struck a chord?
  • Is there anything that readers clearly don’t like to read about?
Comment sections can often be a gold mine of ideas and inspiration. Even spending just five or ten minutes browsing comments today could be enough to stock you up on ideas for the rest of the week.

How Can You Tell if An Idea Will Be Popular?

Sometimes, the ideas that you’ll be given are ones that only apply to one reader (or a very small number of readers). You need to use your own judgment in figuring out which ones will work. Consider:
  • Did several readers ask a similar question or offer a similar suggestion?
  • Is this topic one which makes you think “Oh yes, I struggled with that when I was new, too.”
  • Does the idea fall well within the scope of your blog?
If you can answer “Yes” to one or more of those, you’re probably onto a winning idea.
So … your turn! Run a survey (or even a post focused on readers) to ask what they want to see on your blog. If your blog is too new for that, or if you haven’t launched your blog yet, take a look at the comments on larger blogs that cover the same topics as you.

I Have never SEO researched my topics to post before blogging and I still get decent traffic for my niche, because the content is good. Your blog’s readers probably have Facebook profiles already, and making your own Facebook profile is easy enough. Create a Facebook Group

Your readers have a common interest – your blog’s subject. My readers are preparing for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). Maybe yours are interested in knitting, running, or making money online. Just as they have subscribed to your blog, they will join your Facebook group.
At the beginning of December 2008, I created the 2009 LSAT Study / Discussion Facebook Group. Someone else had created a 2008 LSAT Group, and I wanted to be the person to create the 2009 group, so I started early. When someone is searching Facebook for an LSAT group to join this year, they’ll see my group has over 100 members, but someone else’s group on the same topic only has 3, guess which group they’ll join.
Note: I didn’t make the group about my blog directly – I made it broader. Why? So people searching on Facebook for LSAT-related groups would feel welcome to join. If they thought it was limited to my blog’s readers, the prospective member might not even visit the group page, which means he/she would never see the link to my blog.
So I created a group and placed a prominent link to my blog on the top, but it only had one member – me. Not very impressive, right? I didn’t want my readers to think my group and blog were unpopular, so I immediately invited all of my Facebook friends to join the group. Some of my Facebook friends were already planning to take the LSAT, so inviting them to join my new Facebook group had two additional benefits:
1. It informed them of my blog if they didn’t know about it already.
2. Facebook’s news feed told all their friends, making the group a viral marketing mechanism for the blog..

Search Facebook for groups on your topic and related ones. By promoting your Facebook group at first, instead of promoting your blog, you decrease the likelihood that the group administrator will remove your message.
After doing all of this, Facebook became one of my biggest sources of traffic, and I don’t even have to do much to keep the Facebook traffic coming. In order to get more readers, you need to have a presence where they are. For me and for many bloggers these days, our present and future readers spend their time in social networking sites.

Using Google Docs and Using the Link in a Post

  • Go to www.docs.google.com.
  • If you are not already logged into your Blogger account, then use your Blogger account information (username/password) to login to Google Docs (it's the same).
  • From the main screen, click the UPLOAD button. Then a screen below will appear:







    Uploadafile

    • From this window, click the Browse button to locate the file on your computer that you would like to link to from your Blogger post. Click OK once you've selected the file.
    • From this screen type if a name "What do you want to call it?" if you want. Otherwise, click Upload File.
    • The document is now previewed on your screen.  Copy and select the URL address.  This address is what you will use in the post!
    • Go back to your post or create a new post in Blogger.
    • Write something like "Click here to download the flyer".
    • Select the two words "Click Here" and click the LINK button on the toolbar (looks like a paper clip or infinity symbol).  Paste in the URL address you copied from Google docs.

To embed a gallery, switch to the “Edit Page Layout” tab and hover the cursor over “Add content box” button. In the drop-down choose Photo&Video and drag and drop “Photo Gallery” component to the desired location in your web design.

5. The “Add infobox” window will pop up. Click on the “Add a new element” button.



6. A Photo Gallery has been added to the right side bar of our website design. See the screenshot below.

7. Configuring Photo Gallery settings. Click on the “Edit Content” tab and mouse over the customizing area.

8. Gallery Settings window will open. Here you will be able to set small photo width and height, middle photo width and height, images border width and color, images background color, images horizontal and vertical margins and etc.

9. Our Photo Gallery is filled with the sample photos. To replace these photos, simply mouse them over and click on “Edit highlighted content”.

10. “Edit Photo” window will open. Here you may upload a new image, edit photo title, specify its date and write a photo comment. While uploading small and middle images, keep in mind their size you’ve specified in Step 8.

The main element on the podcast website is a MP3 file. You can easily upload files from your computer or copy from public directories. To add an audio file, go to “Edit Page Layout” =>”Add Content Box” => Miscellaneous. Select “MP3 Player” and drag this item to the chosen page area.

Today we will create a simple vlog for a legal advice office Morgan&Phillips LLP. For this purpose we chose on of the premium web turnkeys for lawyers available in our gallery. Here it is:


1. As always we will start from editing some meta data information of the website's main page. Go to the “Edit Page Layout” tab and click on “Page Properties”. Here you can set meta tags for the page. Here is the new HTML title we've created:


2. Next step is a logotype change. Switch to the “Edit Content” mode and click “Edit highlighted content” in the upper right corner of the logo area. The same way we changed the slogan.


3. As video is the main content item of video blog website we can create the video list at one moment. Press “Advanced Conetent Editing” tab and on the right menu select Pages content => Yahoo video. Click on the button “Add new item” highlighted in red in the picture below. This way you can create a few videos which will be stored in the Yahoo Video administration category.


To add video on the page, go to the “Edit Page Layout” tab => Add content box => Photo&Video => Yahoo/Google/Youtube video. Drag the video box to the necessary position and in the opened window move the item you need to the right column.


To edit or resize the video, go to “Edit content” tab, click “Edit highlighted content” in the video area and set video properties. You can easily add a thumbnail by pasting the image link to the appropriate field.


4. Once the video is on the page, we need to give it some title. This can be done with the help of text info box. Go to “Advanced content management” => Pages content => Page Texts. Click “Add new item” button and type the title and the preview text.


To display the title on the page, go to “Edit Page Layout” tab => “Add content box” => Pages texts => Page texts. Drag the item right to the target position.


In the opened window, select necessary title and drag it into the column “Displayed infobox elements”.


By doing these simple operations, you can add as many videos to the page as you need.

5. By adding new elements to the category “Pages texts” we can create the side bar for our blog. Here is the “Blog archive” category:


To edit this infobox, or to link entries to the particular pages, go to “Edit content” tab and click on “Edit highlighted content” in the “Blog Archive” area. Select necessary text line and press on “Insert link” button in the WYSIWYG editor. Paste the URL of the page you will link to, set the rest of details and click the green colored button “Insert”.You can link the text both to site's pages and external URLs.


Here is another category we've added to the main page using the order described above.

It's very important to bring all kinds of info representation into play – some people have better visual memory, others prefer listening rather than reading or watching. So try to integrate text, photos, videos and podcasts in your news website the way to reach the necessary effect and draw traffic to your site.

As always Site2You is ready to help and today we will consider some basics of creating a news website within our site builder. You will see that it's quite easy to transform a business style e-turnkey to a news resource.

So here we go and for the start we chose a corporate web turnkey you can see below:


1. First, let's inform search engines that a new website displaying world news and events is created. We can do this by setting meta tags for the home page. Go to “Edit Page Layout” and click on “Page Properties” button. Here you can do all necessary changes concerning home page properties. We've edited HTML title:

2. Next step is main page appearance editing. We have to give our website a proper name and configure a menu bar. To change site's logo, switch to “Edit Content” tab and click on “Edit highlighted content” right near the logo area. The same way you can change the slogan. We found it reasonable to turn slogan into the date.

To edit menu items, click on “Edit highlighted content” in the menu area. In the opened window you can create a new menu item, change item's properties, or simply move it to the necessary position.

3. After our news website got its new title and header, it's time to fill it with some news! In this area you can display all your imagination and knowledge. In our case the upper right side of the site's body will be occupied by breaking news video. To embed a video, switch to the “Edit Page Layout” tab and hover the cursor over “Add content box” button. In the drop-down choose Photo&Video => Google/Yahoo/YouTube Video. In the opened window choose a way of inserting your video and set the rest of details. All video servers usually provide video source code details, just copy the code and paste it into the appropriate field.


To add video thumbnail, resize it or change the title, go to the “Edit content” tab and as usually, click on “Edit highlighted content” in the upper right corner of the video area.

You can add title and preview text to the featured video by transforming any text box available in the Site2You builder. Choose “Edit Page Layout” => “Add content box” => Page texts and choose “Page texts” item in the drop down. Select content box you want to be displayed by dragging it to the right column of the window (see the picture below)


To adapt the text to your needs, switch to “Edit content” mode and edit necessary content box.

4. Left column of our website main section will display the category “Top News Headlines”. We created it the way described above. Simply inserted “Featured Services” info box and edited it.


Now the WIM.news website provides people with some hot news:


5. Let's place a photo gallery to the lower left corner of the site's main section. Again, insert a particular content box and transform it to the photo showcase section. You can upload any photo by using “iBrowser' button right in the WYSIWYG area.


6. Each website category should lead to some exact page. Let's link photo section placed on the home page to the page Photos. First of all, we have to create a new page: “Edit Page Layout” => “Add New Page”. As you know, our site builder is most intuitive, so it won't take much time for you to set up the “Photos” page.


After adding some information boxes, we've got this:


In this example we didn't set a menu button for this page. But in case you want to do this, follow next steps: “Edit Page Layout” => “Page Properties” => “Add A New Menu Button”.


So how a visitor will get to the page “Photos” from the main page? That's easy! Go to the home page, switch to the “Edit content” mode, and press “Edit highlighted content” in the photo area. An image will be the link to the “Photos” page. Select the image, click “Insert link” button and paste the URL of the page “Photos”.


This way you can link any info section to the proper web page.

7. Last thing we will do around the main page of our news website is “More news” category. It can be done the same way as any other content box we've created before. The only difference is that this section is multi-column. This can be achieved by using “Insert a new table” button (see the picture below).


Simply create a table, type necessary text, insert links and voila:
