How to customize a website

How to customize a website

Maintaining a business you certainly need to present it on the web. Today it's impossible to be successful without having a professional website. Modern technologies enable everyone to build websites even without special web development skills and knowledge. However, it could become challenging to find a good software or web maker, much time could be lost. Fortunately, there is a solution available for users of all skill levels and business requirements – intuitive online website building package from Site2You.

This article covers all aspects of customizing a website within our website builder. We will show you how easy it is to add pages, edit texts, change layouts, embed videos to your website and many more.

For the following tutorials we chose one of Site2You premium web turnkeys. We'll create a website for a private law office of Mr. Joseph Burns. So this is what we start from.

1. To do any changes around your website, login to the admin area. The panel you can see in the picture below is the main tool bar we will use to customize the website.

2. Have a look around, go to different site pages and get a basic idea of how your website should look like. Home page is the first thing visitors see, so making it attractive and informative is No1 task.
First of all look at the page properties: go to the “Edit Page Layout” tab and press “Page Properties”. Here you can set name, html title and meta tags of the page. After corrections are done hit the button “Save current page”.

HTML title gives the key information about our website to search engines, so we changed the home page title for better indexing. Here is the result:

3. Now we need to specify the company name so visitors could know what private lawyer delivers this website to them. Chose the tab “Edit content” and click on “Edit highlighted content” right near the logo area.

In the opened window type necessary company name and chose “Yes” in the field below. Save element by hitting the “Save” button.

The same way you can edit the bottom slogan (right under the company name) and the top slogan (under the welcome text).

4. Like any other content element, welcome text is editable. If you want to change text or template photos as well, click “Edit highlighted content” and with the help of usable WYSIWYG editor do the operations you need. To change pictures in the welcome text, click button “iBrowser”. In the opened window you can find fitting pics in our media library. Or you can upload them from your computer. Pick the first button “Upload file” in the bottom part of the window => choose necessary photo => click green button “Upload”. New picture will appear in the media library. Find it in the “Images” section, select and click “Insert”.

This is how updated welcome text area looks.

5. And we're continuing to modify the home page for Joseph Burns' website. What about adding some more information to the page? With Site2You website builder tools this is like a piece of cake. For example, we need to embed a video file with a message of Joseph Burns to his clients.
To do this, go to “Edit Page Layout” tab => “Add content box” => “Photo&Video” => “Yahoo video” (or any other video server). Just grab needed item and drag it to the content area. In the video properties window embed the video source code (all video servers provide these details) or paste single video details such as video ID, width and height.

To Edit video content box, move to the “Edit content” tab and press “Edit highlighted content” button in the video area. Here you can set title for the video, resize it or change the ID details. Don't forget to save the changes.

6. Our website builder CMS provides special info boxes tailored to the law company possible needs. You can simply choose one of them and set their position in the site body space. Each of the page texts can be adjusted to any topic purposes.

In our example, we enriched the home page with infobox “Attorneys profiles”, Google map, which shows the company location, video message and section “Events”. Here is new appearance of our homepage:

7. In the previous article we covered some attractive sides of blogging. Considering this, it makes sense to add blog page to our website. Blog will become an additional content source for you, it will make your website more interactive and search engine friendly.

All the details and nuances of blog creation within our site maker are revealed in the previous post. Now we will just consider some alternative option of blog page settings: the page won't have its own menu button, we will give it a submenu item instead.

For this purpose, click on “Advanced Content Editing" tab and on the right menu select “Work with pages” => “Blog”. In the settings section you can edit page information the way you need.

After that go down the page. Here you will see section “Add a menu button”. Set the name of the menu item and choose its level. Click “Submit” and save the changes.

Here is the result:

As we've already mentioned, you can edit the layout of the blog page the way you need by using standard info boxes. Below you can see how our final blog page looks like:

All operations we've done for the customizing of the home page and blog of our law company website can be done on any other page. Edit, change, add, mix, replace – you can do everything to make your site more attractive and eye-catching. Site2You provides you with all necessary tools. How to create a blog website

How to create a blog website

How to create a blog website

Today thousands of websites available in the Internet are made in the blog format. Since 1997, when Jorn Barger coined the term weblog (with time it shortened to blog ), this type of website became extremely popular.

Let's find out the main reasons for this.

1. Blogs are great for communication. It's all about interactivity here. Comments are an integral part of any blog, so you can get to know what people think about your ideas, products, experience etc.

2.Blogs enable everyone to publish their thoughts on the web. There are lots of easy-to-use blog applications available, so you don't have to be a professional web developer to get presented in the Internet. Any individual or company has an opportunity to address hundreds of thousands of people every day.

3.Blogs help build trust. Any business is striving for winning customers' confidence and increasing credibility. Blog is a most relational medium, so it's indispensable in building trust with the audience.

4.Blogs are well indexed by search engines. Frequent updates and focus on a certain topic are among the distinctive blog features – search engines value this most of all.

5.Blogs build reputation. Again, blog format is designed the best way to show expertise and win the audience of the field you are working in.

In order to provide our customers with all the tools needed to make their websites successful, site2you added “blogability” to our site building system. Blog as an additional content source is a great way of drawing traffic to your website and converting visitors into sales.
See how to create a blog within site2you website builder below. It will take you a few simple steps.

1. Let's create a seprate page which will contain our blog. Log in to the admin area of your website. Go to the “Edit Page Layout” tab and press “Add new page” button. In the opened window choose necessary layout of your blog page and name it.

Next step is page meta information set up. It enables search engines to index your blog page. Great SEO friendly feature.

After you added meta tags to the blog page, create a menu item for it. You can item's position simply by dragging it up or down the menu list.

Finally we've got a new page Blog with its own menu item

2. Now to give our blog its specific features like comments and data we need to add site2you in-built “Blog” infobox. Click on the “Add content box” button in the “Edit page layout” tab, go down to Miscellaneous and select Blog in the drop-down. Hold left mouse button on it and drag infobox to the main section of the page.

In the next opened window you may set blog preferences listed in the picture below.

By clicking “Add a new element” in the window above, you can create the first post in your blog. For maximum convenience in your blog management, we provide Post Preview option which allows you to write unique summary for the post. The preview text will be displayed on the main blog page. The rest of the entry can be read by clicking on the post title.

3. Now our first blog post is displayed on the page. You can easy edit it, or add a new entry by going to the “Edit Content” tab and choosing element management buttons right in the post area.

4. The initial page layout we chose in the very beginning provides additional text box on the right side of the content section. One of the great options of our website builder is layout flexibility. You may simply add or remove content boxes to make the page look the way you need. In this example, we will the “Blog Right Column” into the sidebar of our blog. Just press “Edit highlighted content” in the current info box area and type necessary information. In our case it is Blogroll.

To add another element to the info box, click on “Add a new element” button and add text the way described above. Then choose the “Edit Page Layout” tab and press “Element list” button highlighted in red in the picture below.

In the opened window you will see all available text elements. Select necessary element (in our case it's “Recent Entries”) and move it to the right column “Displayed infobox elements”.

Here is what we've got.

As you see, it's quite easy to enrich your website with the blog. Our website maker enables to change classic website to blog. This will take a bit more effort, as you will have to remove almost all pages which are useless for the blog format. In one of our next articles we will cover some more aspects of changing a website into blog.

But remember that the bare fact that you have blog doesn't guarantee immediate success. Like any other sort of website, blog requires much work and attention. However, in this post we mentioned many attractive aspects of blogging which should be certainly taken into consideration.

How to create and customize a logo

How to create and customize a logo

How to create and customize a logo

One of the most important and complex processes in managing a website is logo designing. However, once you come up with the concept behind the logo, the rest doesn't seem to be that hard. Website logotype requires a good bunch of consideration as it is the main carrier of your company's brand and idea. When a user visits a website or any resource in which a logo is displayed, the first thing that hits them should be the logo. That's why put your best effort into making logo design perfect both in concept and technical implementation.
This article might be helpful in your logo design attempts. Learn how to easily customize a logotype and apply it within our website builder. In order to practice in logo designing you may download free logo example which was used in the following tutorial. The folder includes .PSD file, so you may simply tailor this logotype to your project needs.

Let's try to customize the chosen logo and make it fit one of the site2you turnkeys.

1. First of all we need to remove the title of the logo and hide the background: open the logo file in Adobe Photoshop, then go to the Layers list on the right menu and turn off three layers by clicking on their visibility indicators. Necessary layers are highlighted in red in the picture below.

2. Now we have to change the background of the logo to make it suit the header. To do this, make logo's background layer visible, go down the tools menu and set background color by clicking on the back square (highlighted in red below). Click on the Gradient tool and select the Paint Bucket tool in the drop-down menu. Now click on the empty space around the logo and it will turn to black.

3. Let's add some effects to our logo to make it different from the current one. Double click on Layer 14 on the right menu. In the opened layer window select options Outer Glow, Bevel&Emboss, Contour and Texture. Double click on each option to set the properties.

4. The current logo is colored in green and blue. To change this, click on the foreground square down the tools menu and pick up the color. Select Pain Bucket tool and click on any logo element to change its color to the one you need.

The logo colors must not be out of the website general color scheme. So we made our logo appropriate for the chosen web turnkey design. Here is the result:

5. Since we've got our new logo, let's embed it into the website. Log in to the admin panel of your web turnkey. Choose "Edit Content" tab and click the button “Edit highlighted content” right in the logo area.

6. Click "Browse" and chose the logotype file you want to insert. Set this logo as default, using the field below. Click "Save" to update the element. Check the change by clicking on the "Preview" tab.

7. If you want to resize the default logotype, choose the tab “Advanced Content Editing” on the admin panel. You will see elements menu on the left side of the window. Go to "Static content" --> "Site Logotype" --> "Logotype settings" --> "default". Here you can set width and height of your logotype. Save the updated element. Press "Site Preview" tab to check the updates.

Here is the final result.

To make an advanced logo from scratch you certainly need some web design experience. But you can always buy some simple logotype, cusomize it and make it look unique. Besides, you may contact  webmasters anytime - they will offer professional logo solutions right for your business needs. Remember that interesting concept and accordance to website theme are things that make your logo remarkable. How to create a site

How to create a site

If you want to create a website but don’t know where to start, you might be interested in the following information. Like any initiative, website requires a good deliberation first. Before thinking about your website’s design and structure, decide what kind of site you want to have and who is your audience. Is making profit the main goal of your website? These questions will determine the amount of time and financial resources you have to put into the site’s creation.
There are always two ways of how to create a website:
  1. By yourself (completely, based on template or in site-builder)
  2. Involving  professionals or a web studio
No matter what way you choose, you will go through a few stages of website creation:
  1. Registration of a domain name. You register it on an annual basis. Don't forget that domain names would cost you something.
  2. Getting a web host. Hosting service enables your website to be viewed by the rest of the world, 24/5. It can be anywhere between $20 per month and many hundreds of dollars per month. You always should take an eye on hosting.
  3. Website building. This step includes development of the website’s structure, creating a design of the site and program base development of the backend.
If you want just to show off your hobbies and interests and create an introductive personal website or blog, it won’t cost you much money and effort but would take to much time to manage it.
For those who want to create a website for business purposes, or e-commerce site, variant above is not proper. If you want to create a unique custom website, consult a professional.Yyou can simply purchase the creation of your website in a web studio or try to outsource it with different companies. On average you’ll have to pay $800-1000 for the visiting site, $1500-2000 for the corporative site and $5000-10000 for the internet shop. Of course, prices depend on the quality of the site’s base, design and amount of additional functions. Creating a website this way will provide you with a unique and high-qualitative website which is made specially for your needs, but it should be aid accordingly though.
You may choose a way of creating your website by yourself. This will cost you less money but much more time, as you will have to get and learn some software, or maybe even a programming language (or two, or three) to build your site from scratch. To create a good functional site you will need:
  • Html-editor (Adobe Dreamweaver, FrontPage). You’ll need it to make the right coding.
  • Graphic editor (Adobe PhotoShop). This software is used for design creation.
  • Virtual Server (Apache). It is used for creating proper conditions in which your future site will exist.
  • Tons of skills in PHP! Well-known programming language.
Pretty much to learn, huh? BTW you should buy all those software above. If you business is ready to wait for a while – go on and become a web developer! But what to do when you want a qualitative website today and at the same time don’t want to spend much time and money on it? Well, there is a good decision even for this situation.
You can build your own site very quickly with the help of website builder. It doesn’t require any special knowledge. You can create a standard website online in a few minutes and this won’t cost you anything. If you want a package which includes an advanced site, a registered domain name, hosting service and so on, you can use paid building services. This will cost you about $50-100 per month. Price would depends on how much additional services and support you will get. That's why we are offering to you the cheapest (we do think so) and the most valuable solution in website creation. It is our Website Turnkeys for as low as $0 per month!
Buying a website template is also a good way to create a personalized website without much investment. You may buy a website template, fill it in with your information and upload it to the server.  Maybe website templates are not extremely beautiful and customizable, but when you need a standard ordinary website, this can be a good decision. BUT remember of all those skills you should know to customize the template and make it work online!
You see that even if you don’t have much money and knowledge in website creation area, you have an opportunity and solutions online to create a solid website which will help you to introduce yourself, find new clients and get a profit.

Beginner's Guide to SEO - Critical Components

Beginner's Guide to SEO - Critical Components

Each of the following components are critical pieces to a site's ability to be crawled, indexed, and ranked by search engine spiders. When properly used in the construction of a website, these features give a site/page the best chance of ranking well for targeted keywords.

Accessibility

An accessible site is one that ensures delivery of its content successfully as often as possible. The functionality of pages, validity of HTML elements, uptime of the site's server, and working status of site coding and components all figure into site accessibility. If these features are ignored or faulty, both search engines and users will select other sites to visit.
The biggest problems in accessibility that most sites encounter fit into the following categories. Addressing these issues satisfactorily will avoid problems getting search engines and visitors to and through your site.
  1. Broken Links - If an HTML link is broken, the contents of the linked-to page may never be found. In addition, some surmise that search engines negatively degrade rankings on sites & pages with many broken links.
  2. Valid HTML & CSS - Although arguments exist about the necessity for full validation of HTML and CSS in accordance with W3C guildlines, it is generally agreed that code must meet minimum requirements of functionality and successful display in order to be spidered and cached properly by the search engines.
  3. Functionality of Forms and Applications - If form submissions, select boxes, javascript, or other input-required elements block content from being reached via direct hyperlinks, search engines may never find them. Keep data that you want accessible to search engines on pages that can be directly accessed via a link. In a similar vein, the successful functionality and implementation of any of these pieces is critical to a site's accessibility for visitors. A non-functioning page, form, or code element is unlikely to receive much attention from visitors.
  4. File Size - With the exception of a select few documents that search engines consider to be of exceptional importance, web pages greater than 150K in size are typically not fully cached. This is done to reduce index size, bandwidth, and load on the servers, and is important to anyone building pages with exceptionally large amounts of content. If it's important that every word and phrase be spidered and indexed, keeping file size under 150K is highly recommended. As with any online endeavor, smaller file size also means faster download speed for users - a worthy metric in its own right.
  5. Downtime & Server Speed - The performance of your site's server may have an adverse impact on search rankings and visitors if downtime and slow transfer speeds are common. Invest in high quality hosting to prevent this issue.
URLs, Title Tags & Meta Data
URLs, title tags and meta tag components are all information that describe your site and page to visitors and search engines. Keeping them relevant, compelling and accurate are key to ranking well. You can also use these areas as launching points for your keywords, and indeed, successful rankings require their use.
The URL of a document should ideally be as descriptive and brief as possible. If, for example, your site's structure has several levels of files and navigation, the URL should reflect this with folders and subfolders. Individual pages' URLs should also be descriptive without being overly lengthy, so that a visitor who sees only the URL could have a good idea of what to expect on the page.
In addition to the issues of brevity and clarity, it's also important to keep URLs limited to as few dynamic parameters as possible. A dynamic parameter is a part of the URL that provides data to a database so the proper records can be retrieved, i.e. n=3031001, v=glance, categoryid=145, etc.
Well written URLs have the additional benefit of serving as their own anchor text when copied and pasted as links in forums, blogs, or other online venues. The parsing and breaking of terms is subject to the search engine's analysis, but the chance of earning this additional credit makes writing friendly, usable URLs even more worthwhile.
Title tags, in addition to their invaluable use in targeting keyword terms for rankings, also help drive click-through-rates (CTRs) from the results pages. Most of the search engines will use a page's title tag as the blue link text and headline for a result (see image below), and thus it is important to make them informative and compelling without being overly "salesy". The best title tags will make the targeted keywords prominent, help brand the site, and be as clear and concise as possible.
Examples and Recommendations for Title Tags
Page on Red Pandas from the Wellington Zoo:
- Current Title: Red Panda
- Recommended: Red Panda - Habitat, Features, Behavior | Wellington Zoo
Page on Alexander Calder from the Calder Foundation:
- Current Title: Alexander Calder
- Recommended: Alexander Calder - Biography of the Artist from the Calder Foundation
Page on Plasma TVs from Tiger Direct:
- Current Title: Plasma Televisions, Plasma TV, Plasma Screen TVs, SONY Plasma TV, LCD TV at TigerDirect.com
- Recommended: Plasma Screen & LCD Televisions at TigerDirect.com
For each of these, the idea behind the recommendations is to distill the information into the clearest, most useful snippet while retaining the primary keyword phrase as the first words in the tag. The title tag provides the first impression of a web page and can either serve to draw the visitor in or compel him or her to choose another listing in the results.
Meta Tag Recommendations:

Meta tags once held the distinction of being the primary realm of SEO specialists. Today, the use of meta tags, particularly the meta keywords tag, has diminished to an extent that search engines no longer use them in their ranking of pages. However, the meta description tag can still be of some importance, as several search engines use this tag to display the snippet of text below the clickable title link in the results pages.
In the image to the left, an illustration of a Google SERP (Search Engine Results Page) shows the use of the meta description and title tags. It is on this page that searchers generally make their decision as to which result to click, and thus, while the meta description tag may have little to no impact on where a page ranks, it can significantly impact the # of visitors the page receives from search engine traffic. Note that meta tags are NOT always used on the SERPs, but can be seen (at the discretion of the search engine) if the description is accurate, well-written, and relevant to the searcher's query.
Search-Friendly Text
Making the visible text on a page "search-friendly" isn't complicated, but it is an issue that many sites struggle with. Text styles that cannot be indexed by search engines include:
  • Text embedded in a Java Application or Macromedia Flash file
  • Text in an image file - jpg, gif, png, etc
  • Text accessible only via a form submit or other on-page action
If the search engines can't see your page's text, they cannot spider and index that content for visitors to find. Thus, making search-friendly text in HTML format is critical to ranking well and getting properly indexed. If you are forced to use a format that hides text from search engines, try to use the right keywords and phrases in headlines, title tags, URLs, and image/file names on the page. Don't go overboard with this tactic, and never try to hide text (by making it the same color as the background or using CSS tricks). Even if the search engines can't detect this automatically, a competitor can easily report your site for spamming and have you de-listed entirely.
Along with making text visible, it's important to remember that search engines measure the terms and phrases in a document to extract a great deal of information about the page. Writing well for search engines is both an art and a science (as SEOs are not privy to the exact, technical methodology of how search engines score text for rankings), and one that can be harnessed to achieve better rankings.
In general, the following are basic rules that apply to optimizing on-page text for search rankings:
  • Make the primary term/phrase prominent in the document - Measurements like keyword density are useless, but general frequency can help rankings.
  • Make the text on-topic and high quality - Search engines use sophisticated lexical analysis to help find quality pages, as well as teams of researchers identifying common elements in high quality writing. Thus, great writing can provide benefits to rankings, as well as visitors.
  • Use an optimized document structure - The best practice is generally to follow a journalistic format wherein the document starts with a description of the content, then flows from broad discussion of the subject to narrow. The benefits of this are arguable, but in addition to SEO value, they provide the most readable and engaging informational document. Obviously, in situations where this would be inappropriate, it's not necessary.
  • Keep text together - Many folks in SEO recommend using CSS rather than table layouts in order to keep the text flow of the document together and prevent the breaking up of text via coding. This can also be achieved with tables - simply make sure that text sections (content, ads, navigation, etc.) flow together inside a single table or row and don't have too many "nested" tables that make for broken sentences and paragraphs.
Keep in mind that the text layout and keyword usage in a document no longer carries high importance in search engine rankings. While the right structure and usage can provide a slight boost, obsessing over keyword placement or layout will provide little overall benefit.
